Review: It is the catalogue of the first amazing retrospective exhibition on Bulgari held at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome in 2009. The exhibition, with over 500 objects, celebrated the 125th anniversary of the opening of the first store in Rome in 1884.
This book is a colorful illustrated journey to the Bulgari jewelry history which begins with silver artefacts created by the founder of the firm, Sotirio Bulgari, a Greek silversmith who settled in Rome in 1881, through the amazing diamond-set jewels in Art Déco style, representative examples of the 1940s and 1950s, influenced by the Parisian jewelry to the eclectic and original creations of the 1970s and the innovative designs of the 1980s and 1990s.
The volume is articulated not just in chronological way but also in thematic. The great attention is dedicated to the most significant and recognised Bulgari style themes: coins mounted in jewelry, serpent motifs, the so-called Tubogas and the BVLGARI logo used as a decorative element.
The chapter devoted to the Dolce Vita with the stunning photos of jewels worn by Ingrid Bergman, Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren, Anna Magnani was very curious. The entire article about the extraordinary Bulgari collection belonging to Elizabeth Taylor, her enormous emeralds and love story with Richard Burton is worthy of the special attention.
Entertaining and didactical at the same time, this book is the essential complement to any jewelry lover’s collection.
