Rabaa Saleh S. Alangari: When something is authentically rooted, it resonates globally.

Jewelry tends to whisper, but YOURA jewelry speaks with intention. Saudi designer Rabaa Saleh Alangari weaves together Bedouin storytelling, workshop trial-and-error, and quiet defiance against convention.

You’ll uncover the stories behind an eagle-inspired cuff that took twelve prototypes to strike the perfect balance between geometry and wearability, rubies hand-selected to echo the fiery glow of Saudi desert sunsets and teardrop diamonds engineered to sparkle with every movement.

We dive into how Rabaa reimagines sacred symbols like the Arabian eagle into contemporary designs that honor her roots and why she insists a clasp matters as much as a carat.

In our conversation we explore how YOURA was born, what it means to her personally, and how culture, emotion, and innovation are intricately woven into every piece.

LIJ: YOURA carries both your initials and the powerful concept of “be seen.” How did this vision evolve, and what does it mean to you personally?

The creation of YOURA was deeply intentional. I sought to capture something fundamental about self-expression through jewelry so I fused my initials with the philosophy “be seen”. There was this turning point in my life when I realized

jewelry could be so much more than just something pretty to wear. A way to say “This is me” in a world that often wants us to blend in.

Everything begins unseen, just like a diamond. Deep in the earth, under all that pressure, it’s completely hidden. Then through time and transformation, it becomes this sparkly thing everyone admires. That’s so much like our personal journeys, isn’t it?

All those quiet struggles, emotions, unseen efforts, quiet steps and then one day, there’s this moment when everything comes together and you step into the light,  stronger, finer, and brighter. This is what I genuinely want to convey: that moment when all hidden efforts are revealed. This is what YOURA represents: a journey from the invisible to the undeniable, celebrating the strength, resilience, and brilliance that has always been there, waiting to be seen.

LIJ: How does being a Saudi designer influence your work, and can you share an example of how you’ve adapted local culture into designs that appeal globally?

When people ask about Saudi influence, I immediately think of the contradictions I grew up with: the stark desert landscapes against the vibrant souks overflowing with vibrant hues of patterned traditional textiles. That visual tension lives in every piece I design.

Take our Desert Rose collection. I took inspiration from traditional Bedouin jewelry, rendering it in clean, modern lines that don’t weigh down the wrist. The color palette though, that’s pure Saudi Arabia. Those deep ruby reds? They’re the sunset over the Empty Quarter. The sapphire blues? Exactly the shade where the Red Sea meets the coral reefs. I refuse to compromise on those. I believe that when something is authentically rooted, it resonates globally in ways calculated designs never do.

Many expect Saudi jewelry to be heavy, ornate, and deeply rooted in historical references.  My challenge and opportunity has been to refine those cultural elements into something that feels fresh, wearable, and globally desirable.

The eagle motif was my hardest fight. Our culture sees it sacred, a symbol of vision and leadership. I’ve abstracted it into sleek, geometric forms, allowing it to blend seamlessly into modern luxury jewelry and proving that tradition can be honoured without being literal.

LIJ: Why did you choose the eagle as YOURA’s symbol, and how does it reflect the brand’s values and vision?

Choosing the eagle wasn’t just a design decision. It was almost instinctual. In Arab culture,

the eagle is a storyteller. It carries this duality of fierce precision and effortless grace, which mirrors exactly what YOURA stands for: strength with elegance, ambition with purpose.

The “Soaring Wings” collection has sharp, angular lines that reflect the eagle’s strength and precision, while flowing, open designs symbolize its freedom in flight. The collection catches light like an eagle’s wing mid-flight, but still feels smooth against the skin. The Vision Pendant was even more personal. The feather patterns framing the center stone? They’re designed to draw the eye inward, like how an eagle focuses before diving. It’s a reminder that clarity comes from stillness, even in motion.

But there’s also a deeper layer: the old legend about eagles snatching diamonds from cliffs. I love that metaphor. It’s not just about reaching heights; it’s about recognizing true value when you see it. That’s why we’re obsessive about materials. Every gemstone we source has to tell that same story of rarity and intention.

LIJ: That sounds fascinating! Tell us more about how this legend influences your design process and material choices.

That eagle-and-diamonds legend? It’s become our design north star. The pursuit of something rare, precious, and hard to reach – that’s exactly how we approach every piece. Just like the eagle carefully seeks treasures, we source only high-quality, ethically sourced gems and metals. Because jewelry should feel as valuable as those legendary diamonds.

When designing Soaring Wings cuff, we wrestled for months with this paradox: sharp, angular lines for the eagle’s precision and flowing, organic elements for its grace. Making something both strong yet delicate, bold yet wearable? Let’s just say our workshop floor was littered with failed prototypes.

Regarding materials, we’re drawn to diamonds, blue and pink sapphires, rubies, emeralds – not just for their beauty, but what they represent. Take diamonds: formed under immense pressure, just like people transforming. That’s the real magic – when a client recognizes their own journey in these stones.

LIJ: You described your jewels as “art mingled with magic.” Can you share how this philosophy translates into the tangible aspects of your designs—shapes, colors, or materials? Are there any unique techniques you use to make them stand out?

This idea captures exactly how we approach design: with equal parts of intention and wonder. It begins with shapes: flowing, organic lines that echo the smoothness of water or an eagle’s grace in flight. I balance this fluidity with geometric precision, reinterpreting traditional patterns through a modern lens. The result is jewelry that feels both timeless and contemporary, familiar yet fresh.

Color is where the magic becomes visible. We select gems and earthy hues deliberately: deep blues and greens that evoke the sky and earth, warm golds that mirror sunlight. By playing with gradients and combinations, we create depth that feels almost alive. Each stone is chosen for its symbolic power: diamonds representing personal transformation, emeralds conveying wisdom, sapphires reflecting boundless ambition, and rubies embodying fiery passion.

The true alchemy lies in how these elements unite. A single piece might pair the sharpness of geometric angles with the softness of organic forms, or contrast cool tones with warm metals. That’s where the magic lives: not in any single technique, but in the way wearers see their own journeys reflected in the designs.

LIJ: Are there any specific techniques or innovations you use in crafting your jewelry?

Depth and discovery are central to our craftsmanship. We layer matte and high-shine gold finishes, delicate engravings, and subtle metalwork gradations to create pieces that reveal themselves gradually. Much of our signature detail lives in the quiet moments—a feather-like texture visible only at certain angles, or hidden engravings on a ring’s inner band. These intentional secrets make each piece feel like a personal dialogue between the jewelry and its wearer.

Our Shades of Dates collection exemplifies this philosophy. Dates hold profound cultural significance in Saudi Arabia—both as sustenance and as symbols of generosity. We translated this meaning through meticulous design: geometric eagle-inspired shapes form the structural foundation, while pavé diamonds in white, yellow, and brown emulate the fruit’s natural hues. Marquise-cut emeralds, arranged like palm fronds, add organic contrast to the angular backdrop. What began as a cultural homage became something more universal—a wearable bridge between heritage and contemporary expression.

LIJ: Collections like Happy Color and Tears of Joy feature powerful themes. How do you decide which materials and forms best express these ideas? Does the concept come first, or do the materials guide the narrative?

The emotional theme always leads the creative process. These themes spring from universal human experiences—that overwhelming joy that bubbles up in happy moments, or the tears that come from being deeply moved. Once we establish this emotional core, it naturally guides every subsequent decision, from material selection to color palette and form.

For Happy Color, we pursue vibrancy through every element. Bright gemstones like sapphires and rubies become visual embodiments of energy, complemented by colorful enamels that amplify the sense of happiness. But we go beyond mere appearance—multi-gem arrangements introduce playful unpredictability, while asymmetrical designs break from convention to mirror joy’s spontaneous nature. The high-polish and enamel finishes aren’t just decorative; they create a radiant glow that makes each piece feel alive with movement.

Tears of Joy required a completely different approach. Here, we sought to capture that profound moment when happiness overwhelms—the graceful motion of tears. Pear-cut shapes and watery hues of aquamarines and moonstones establish the ethereal quality, while ultra-fine metalwork creates an almost weightless effect. The real technical achievement lies in the articulated settings—engineered to allow delicate movement with every gesture, so the jewels shimmer like actual tears catching light. Our drop earrings exemplify this perfectly, with cascading diamonds that flow naturally rather than remaining static.

In both collections, every material choice and structural decision serves the emotional narrative first. Whether expressing unbridled joy through bold colors and asymmetrical forms, or conveying tender emotion through fluid motion, the theme remains the guiding force—the materials and techniques are simply how we give those feelings tangible form.

LIJ: Your pieces are known for being both luxurious and wearable. How do you balance elegance with the practicality of everyday wear?

The secret lies in designing for real life. Our Feminine Bracelet from the Happy Color collection had to feel special enough to be a treasure, but practical enough to wear daily without a second thought.

We paired high polished 18k gold with stingray leather: a combination that looks luxurious but wears comfortably. The delicate gold chains are strategically anchored to leather segments, creating a piece that moves with you while maintaining its shape. The hidden hinge clasp was a particular obsession of mine. It had to fasten securely with one hand—because every woman knows the struggle of wrestling with bracelets before a meeting. The gold catches light like fine jewelry should, while the leather ensures it never feels precious or fussy.

I believe that luxury shouldn’t be reserved for special occasions or remain untouched in a jewelry box. It deserves to be lived in.

This belief shapes every design and technical choice.

LIJ: How do you see YOURA growing in the future, and what values will always define the brand?

Right now, our studio is buzzing with experiments—blending cutting-edge technology with artisanal hand-finishing, playing with new materials like champagne and blush gold alloys, and reimagining how stones interact with light through floating settings and kinetic elements. Even our textures are getting bolder, from high-polish brilliance to moody matte finishes.

But innovation for us isn’t just technical—it’s personal. We’re expanding customization so clients can embed their own stories into pieces, whether through secret engravings or curated gemstone combinations. And yes, our signature eagle motif will keep evolving—I’m currently obsessed with abstract interpretations for layered necklaces and statement rings that feel both ancient and avant-garde.

Sustainability is another key focus. As we grow, we remain committed to responsible sourcing, using ethically mined diamonds and recycled gold. We work exclusively with production partners who share our values. We’re carefully curating limited-edition pieces and working with strategic retail partnerships, but always with our direct client relationships at the heart. And finally, we’re committed to educating consumers about ethical luxury, helping them understand the importance of responsibly sourced materials and the deeper meaning behind each piece.
